We must be in politics for the right reason

I wish to reiterate that we have chosen to be in politics to play our part in building up this nation, to ensure that our country Malaysia will remain true to the principles upon which it was founded and which are enshrined in the 1963 Federal and State Constitution.

September 16 is Malaysia Day and now a National Holiday

The Prime Minister today announced that 16th of September will be a national holiday. In fact in Sabah and Sarawak, it had been a holiday for a long time.

This is a long-overdue recognition of Malaysia Day which is a commemoration of the birth of our beloved nation on the 16 September 1963. The decision by the Government goes a long way to putting right what I have always called a distortion of history.

The announcement is also a significant contribution to the Prime Minister’s passion for a 1 Malaysia where Malaysians from all walks of life, ethnic geographical origin, religious belief, etc can feel that they indeed have a place under the Malaysian sun.

It is time also to remember the founding fathers of this nation. Tun Fuad Stephens, the President of the then UPKO, announced the Declaration of Malaysia on September 16, 1963 in Jesselton as Kota Kinabalu was then known.

He had prior to this declaration, chaired the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) which had in its membership leaders from Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak and Singapore. The IGC was the forum for the discussion of the terms and conditions for the formation of the new nation to be named Malaysia.

UPKO today wishes to restate that its guiding philosophy is the pursuit of the aspirations upon which this nation was formed. The Malaysia Agreement of 1963 and the consequential Federal Constitution contain the wishes of the people of Sabah expressed through various fora including the Twenty Points.

Let us today also remember our founding fathers, to name but a few, Tun Fuad Stephens, Datu Mustapha, Temenggong Jugah, Stephen Kalong Ningkan, Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Abdul Razak etc.

  2. Tahniah Upko...

Pemimpin lain hanya berani membuat kenyataan selepas Perdana Menteri mengumumkan sesuatu contohnya seperti isu projek paip gas Petronas tahun lepas.

Teruskan perjuangan, Tan Sri.. Rakyat memerlukan Upko - pejuang sejati anak negeri dan rakyat Malaysia!!

  3. Sir, I must congratulate you for your principle in this issue. True, historians from Malaya distorted the history of our nation. As you can see, history book that being used in school seems to give impression that Malaysia was born on August 31, 1957. With the announcement, I strongly believe that younger generation will now be more appreciate with our nation. Thank you, sir.

I congratulate Tan Sri Bernard, through his Party UPKO, for his determination ‘to putting right what he has always called a distortion of history’.

Tan Sri has also stated that to be in politics, and rightly so he chose to one as President of UPKO, “to play our part in building up this nation, to ensure that our country Malaysia will remain true to the principles upon which it was founded … “

The formation of Malaysia in 1963 was based upon the spirit of the 20 Points which I quote below. How many of the 20 Points are still relevant now, and why can’t UPKO be the champion to fight for the reinstatement of those ‘annulled’ points which our forefathers have painstakingly included as conditions to formation of Malaysia, particularly the following?

    Point 6: Immigration

Control over immigration into any part of Malaysia from outside should rest with the Central Government but entry into North Borneo should also require the approval of the State Government. The Federal Government should not be able to veto the entry of persons into North Borneo for State Government purposes except on strictly security grounds. North Borneo should have unfettered control over the movements of persons other than those in Federal Government employ from other parts of Malaysia into North Borneo.
    Point 7: Right of Secession
There should be no right to secede from the Federation.

    Point 8: Borneonisation

Borneonisation of the public service should proceed as quickly as possible.

    Point 10: Citizenship

The recommendation in paragraph 148(k) of the Report of the Cobbold Commission should govern the citizenship rights in the Federation of North Borneo subject to the following amendments:
    a) sub-paragraph (i) should not contain the proviso as to five years residence
    b) in order to tie up with our law, sub-paragraph (ii)(a) should read “7 out of 10 years” instead of “8 out of 10 years”
    c) sub-paragraph (iii) should not contain any restriction tied to the citizenship of parents – a person born in North Borneo after Malaysia must be federal citizen.

Point 12: Special position of indigenous races

In principle, the indigenous races of North Borneo should enjoy special rights analogous to those enjoyed by Malays in Malaya, but the present Malays’ formula in this regard is not necessarily applicable in North Borneo.
